Kolkata has reached a new milestone with the launch of India’s first underwater metro along the East-West corridor, running beneath the Hugli River. Hitachi Rail STS India worked with Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation to provide advanced signalling and telecom systems that ensure safe and efficient operations for this landmark project.

The new line connects Howrah, Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector V, easing travel between the industrial hub, one of India’s busiest railway stations and the IT hub. It is expected to cut traffic congestion and reduce environmental impact while improving daily commutes.

Hitachi Rail deployed 11 telecom systems including CCTV for continuous surveillance, access control for secure entry, passenger information displays and clear announcement systems. Together, these improve safety, communication and passenger experience.

The metro also uses wireless communication for its CBTC signalling, reducing risks from cable faults. Built-in redundancy ensures uninterrupted operations even in case of system failures. Safety systems cover tunnel ventilation, platform screen doors, building management and fire protection.

Operations run at Grade of Automation Level 2, where trains can start with driver assistance but much of the system runs automatically. The entire tunnel is covered by a TETRA radio network, ensuring seamless communication during day to day operations.
