Nokia has been honored by IEEE with a Milestone Award for its role in developing and deploying ADSL in the 1990s. The breakthrough made it possible to deliver multi-megabit internet over standard telephone lines, bringing affordable broadband access to nearly a billion people worldwide.
ADSL was first developed in 1993 in Antwerp, Belgium and became the foundation for modern broadband. By enabling faster internet connections without requiring new infrastructure, it helped shape the growth of the digital economy and global connectivity.
With this award ADSL joins a list of historic achievements recognized by IEEE such as Maxwell’s equations, the transatlantic cable and the Compact Disc. The recognition highlights the long-term impact of ADSL in changing how people communicate, work and access information.
Today 30 years later, Nokia continues its broadband research with fiber prototypes capable of reaching 100 Gbps showing how far the technology has evolved since the early 1 Mbps ADSL systems.
