Meta is expanding its Teen Accounts feature to Facebook and Messenger in Indonesia, following earlier adoption on Instagram. These accounts are designed to provide teens with a safer social media experience, while reassuring parents and guardians. Built-in safeguards automatically limit who can contact teens, the type of content they see, and help ensure their time online is balanced. Teens under 16 also need a parent or guardian’s permission to make settings less strict.
Research commissioned by Meta and conducted by Ipsos highlights strong parental support for these protections. Among Indonesian parents and guardians surveyed, 91% support the idea of special teen accounts on social media platforms, and 92% see Instagram Teen Accounts as helpful. Additionally, 87% reported greater confidence in their teen using Instagram under these safeguards, and more than 90% found the default protections useful.
By extending Teen Accounts to Facebook and Messenger, Meta aims to provide families with more consistent safeguards across platforms. The company emphasizes that while online connections bring learning and social benefits, protections are needed to balance these opportunities with safety. Meta says it remains committed to working with families and communities to improve the online experience for young users in Indonesia.
