Nikon Corporation announced a change in its major and largest shareholder as of October 1, 2025. EssilorLuxottica has received authorization from Japanese authorities under the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act to raise its ownership stake in Nikon to as much as 20 percent.
The two companies share a long-standing relationship that began in 2000 with the creation of Nikon-Essilor Co., Ltd., a joint venture focused on the eyeglass lens business. Over the years, Nikon and EssilorLuxottica have maintained a cooperative partnership that combines Nikon’s optical technology expertise with EssilorLuxottica’s leadership in the global eyewear industry.
According to a Large Shareholding Report filed on October 6, EssilorLuxottica now holds 35,331,300 Nikon shares, representing 10.75 percent of total voting rights, up from 9.62 percent before the change.
