Samsung Electronics and Vodafone announced the successful completion of the first call in Europe using Samsung’s virtualized RAN solution with Intel Xeon 6 SoC.

The test supports AI driven, cloud native and open network architecture. The Intel Xeon 6 SoC is optimized for vRAN software and can handle 2G, 4G and 5G workloads on a single server. This setup helps reduce hardware requirements, lower energy use and improve cost efficiency while maintaining network performance.

The milestone was achieved with Dell Technologies providing the server and Wind River supporting the cloud platform. Commercial deployment is planned during 2026.

The development builds on Vodafone’s Open RAN rollout in Germany, where Samsung is a strategic partner. After launching initial test sites, Vodafone plans to expand Open RAN coverage in phases. The city of Wismar in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania is expected to become the first fully Open RAN equipped city in Vodafone Germany’s network later this year.
