Toshiba Chaira Hydropower MoU Focuses on Restoration and Sustainable Operation

Toshiba Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding through its subsidiary Toshiba International Europe Ltd. with National Electricity Company EAD to support the restoration and long term operation of the Chaira pumped storage hydropower plant in Bulgaria.

The Chaira plant is the largest pumped storage facility in the country with an installed capacity of 864 MW across four units. Some units are currently not operational due to aging infrastructure, highlighting the need for upgrades.

Under the agreement, Toshiba will provide technical support including repair work, operational studies and maintenance planning. This includes ongoing work on Unit 1 and support for Units 2, 3 and 4, along with improvements to turbines and generators.

Pumped storage hydropower plays a key role in balancing renewable energy by storing power during low demand and supplying it during peak demand. Bulgaria is considering projects totaling around 4.5 GW to support its energy transition.
