India is rapidly advancing toward becoming a global AI powerhouse, driven by digital transformation, access to talent, data, and compute, and a thriving startup ecosystem. The Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) recent market study on AI highlights the importance of a healthy, competitive ecosystem, emphasizing the role of openness, choice, and innovation in fostering technological growth. Generative AI startups in India surged over 260% in the first half of 2024, reflecting the accessibility of infrastructure and open-source tools for developers.
Google is actively supporting India’s AI journey through a $15 billion investment to establish its first AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, over the next five years. This infrastructure will provide advanced compute capacity for enterprises and startups to build scalable AI solutions. In parallel, Google collaborates with the World Bank Group to develop AI-powered public digital infrastructure for critical sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, and skilling, offering services in over 40 languages and extending accessibility to basic devices.
Through strategic investments, open-source contributions, and multi-stakeholder collaboration with the CCI, government, and ecosystem partners, Google aims to help India achieve a competitive, inclusive, and innovation-driven AI future. This partnership supports India’s vision of ensuring AI empowers citizens and businesses, promoting sustainable growth and technological leadership.
