System Demonstrates Reduced Iridium Use in PEM Electrolysis

Toshiba has developed a proton exchange membrane water electrolysis test system designed to produce hydrogen under high-pressure conditions.

The system can operate at pressures of up to 5 MPa and has been used to test a new membrane electrode assembly that incorporates a low-iridium catalyst, reducing iridium usage by around 90 percent compared to conventional designs.

During testing, the system demonstrated stable performance for more than 1,500 hours under varying pressure conditions, indicating durability and reliability for hydrogen production. The approach enables hydrogen to be generated directly at high pressure, reducing the need for additional compression and improving efficiency in storage and transportation.

The development supports ongoing efforts to scale green hydrogen production using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. It also addresses challenges related to the availability of iridium, a scarce and expensive material used in electrolysis systems.
