OPPO shared the process behind the design of the Reno14 Series, focusing on how user input, material selection and visual ideas came together. Instead of just specs or features, the emphasis was on how the phone looks and feels in everyday use.
The design started with user research to understand style preferences. Two themes emerged: one based on ocean-inspired colors and light effects, and another focused on earthy, nature-like tones. These concepts led to the development of finishes like Opal White and Luminous Green, both using light reflection techniques to create shifting colors.
The team took references from marine life and forests. The Opal White version uses a glass back that changes color when tilted, drawing on the Tyndall effect, where light scatters through particles. Luminous Green aims to resemble light filtering through trees. The glass back took several months to develop due to its complex texture and polish.
The Reno14 Series also features a single piece of sculpted glass, shaped to avoid extra parts like camera bumps. This required adjustments in the production process and material handling.
