Instagram has officially rolled out its Map feature in India, offering users a new way to stay connected with friends and discover interesting locations. The feature lets users opt in to share their last active location with selected friends, with the flexibility to turn it off anytime. Users can also explore the map to see content posted by friends and favorite creators from various places.
Since its initial launch, Instagram has introduced several updates to improve user education and clarity around location sharing. A new persistent indicator now appears at the top of the map, showing whether location sharing is on or off. Another indicator under the profile photo in the Notes tray also clarifies location-sharing status.
To address confusion about location-tagged posts, profile photos have been removed from appearing over tagged content to make it clear that tags don’t reveal someone’s live location. Instagram has also added educational reminders explaining that tagged stories, reels, or posts will appear on the map, along with a preview feature showing how location-tagged content will look.
These improvements aim to make the Map experience safer, clearer, and more user-friendly for people exploring and connecting through shared places on Instagram.
