Toshiba Unveils SF₆-Free 420/550 kV Gas-Insulated Busbar Using Natural Gas

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation has developed a new gas-insulated busbar for 420/550 kV applications that eliminates the use of hexafluoride. The company has replaced SF₆ with natural-origin gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen, addressing environmental concerns linked to the high global warming potential of SF₆. GIBs are essential components in substations, supporting power transmission between transformers, switchgear, and transmission lines.

The newly released design maintains insulation performance while remaining compatible with existing equipment dimensions. Toshiba’s approach includes a high-pressure gas mixture and specialized insulating coatings, enabling the GIB to operate at extra-high-voltage levels. This follows earlier SF₆-free equipment introduced under the AEROXIA™ brand, including a 72/84 kV GIS launched in 2022.

The shift toward natural-origin gases aligns with growing regulatory pressure and interest from utilities seeking alternatives that reduce environmental impact. Toshiba plans further development of SF₆-free GIS products for voltage levels above 220 kV, aiming to support reliable and environmentally conscious power infrastructure across global markets.
