Kpn has partnered with Nokia to upgrade the Netherlands’ core digital infrastructure as part of its nationwide program. This initiative will replace KPN’s existing core and transport systems with an 800G-ready IP and optical network designed to handle growing demand for high-capacity, cloud-based services. KPN, the country’s primary telecom operator, aims to improve performance across its fixed, mobile, business, and wholesale offerings while reducing long-term energy use.
The upgrade uses Nokia’s FP5-based IP routers and PSE-6 optical technology, raising KPN’s overall network capacity from 48 Tbps to more than 216 Tbps. This will support customer speeds above 10 Gbps and allow the company to manage traffic more efficiently. A significant element of the project is the large-scale rollout of segment routing over IPv6 (SRv6), marking one of Europe’s first major brownfield uses of this approach. SRv6 separates network control from physical infrastructure, enabling simpler automation, improved resilience, and more adaptable traffic handling.
FabriQ is designed to link any access type to any service whether hosted on KPN’s cloud or public cloud platforms while incorporating strong encryption and automatic failover. It will support functions such as IP core, peering, metro transport, optical core, service edge, monitoring, and lawful intercept, providing a unified foundation for future digital services across the Netherlands.
