M12 Series Targets Hyperscale Storage with SMR Technology

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage has begun sampling its M12 Series nearline hard disk drives designed for hyperscale and cloud data centers.

The new 3.5-inch HDDs use Shingled Magnetic Recording technology to deliver storage capacities ranging from 30TB to 34TB, addressing growing demand for high-capacity storage driven by cloud services AI workloads and data-intensive applications.

The M12 Series introduces an 11-disk design with glass substrates and helium-filled enclosures to improve durability and enable higher density. It also integrates Toshiba’s Flux Control Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording technology to enhance recording efficiency.

The drives are built for continuous operation and support high workload environments, while improving data transfer rates and reducing power consumption per terabyte compared to previous generations.

Toshiba also plans to introduce CMR-based variants with up to 28TB capacity later in 2026, alongside continued development of next-generation technologies such as HAMR to further expand storage capabilities.
