GE Vernova and Hitachi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor in Southeast Asia. The agreement was announced during the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum in Tokyo.
Under the collaboration the companies will work through their joint ventures GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Hitachi GE Vernova Nuclear Energy to identify commercial opportunities for the BWRX-300 in the region. The initiative will also assess the role of qualified Japanese suppliers and help strengthen the supply chain supporting future small modular reactor deployment.
The BWRX-300 is part of a growing global push toward smaller nuclear reactors designed to support energy security and lower carbon electricity generation.
Construction of the first BWRX-300 is currently underway at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington site in Canada. Four reactors are planned at the location with completion expected by the end of the decade. In the United States the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing an application from Tennessee Valley Authority to build a BWRX-300 reactor at the Clinch River site in Tennessee.
The partnership builds on decades of collaboration between GE Vernova and Hitachi in nuclear technology development.
