Canon has completed 20 years of its EOS 5 series of interchangeable-lens digital cameras in 2025. This camera line was first introduced in September 2005 with the launch of the EOS 5D a DSLR camera. It was the first in Canon’s range for serious amateur users to include a full-frame CMOS sensor, which had earlier been used mainly in professional models. This move helped make full frame cameras more accessible to a wider audience.

Over the years Canon has released eight models in the EOS 5 series. In 2008, it introduced the EOS 5D Mark II, the first in the lineup to support full-HD video recording. This played a role in making DSLR video shooting more common among photographers and content creators.

Later models brought various upgrades. The EOS 5D Mark III, launched in 2012, offered better autofocus and faster shooting. In 2015, Canon launched the EOS 5Ds and 5Ds R with about 50.6 megapixels, which was the highest resolution in the lineup at the time. The EOS 5D Mark IV, released in 2016, offered a balance of image quality, speed and low-light performance.

Canon expanded the series further with the EOS R5 in July 2020. It was the first mirrorless camera in the EOS R system to carry the 5 name and included 8K video recording. Its successor, the EOS R5 Mark II, launched in August 2024, improved both photo and video functions using a new image processor and deep learning-based tracking.
