Chinese Battery Makers Scale Up From 314 Ah to 500 Ah-Plus LFP Cells

Chinese battery manufacturers are accelerating the shift from 314 Ah lithium iron phosphate cells to much larger formats exceeding 500 Ah. The transition is being driven by growing demand for utility scale energy storage systems where higher capacity cells can improve system efficiency and simplify design.

Larger LFP cells allow battery makers and integrators to reduce the total number of cells required in a container. This helps lower balance of system components, simplifies assembly and supports higher energy density in large storage units such as 5 MWh and 6 MWh containers. The move gained momentum through 2025 as storage projects scaled rapidly in China and overseas markets.

Several leading suppliers are already developing or commercialising these larger cells. CATL has advanced cell formats above 500 Ah aimed at long cycle life and high volumetric efficiency. EVE Energy and HiTHIUM are also working on next generation LFP cells in the 600 Ah range and beyond. Other manufacturers are following with similar roadmaps aligned to next generation energy storage systems.

While larger cells offer cost and efficiency benefits they also introduce new challenges around thermal management safety and standardisation. Battery makers are now balancing scale advantages with reliability requirements as the industry moves toward larger format LFP cells.
