Vietnam’s electric vehicle maker VINFAST has started operations at its first Indian plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Built on 400 acres in the SIPCOT industrial park, this is VinFast’s third global facility after Vietnam and the US. The company has committed an initial investment of US $500 million over five years, with plans to invest up to US $2 billion (around ₹16,000 crore).

The plant will begin with a capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year, scalable up to 150,000. It will produce premium EV models VF 6 and VF 7, offering ranges of up to 400 km and 450 km.

The Tamil Nadu unit is also a strategic export hub for VinFast, with confirmed orders from Sri Lanka, Nepal and Mauritius. The company is working to localize sourcing and attract component makers to Thoothukudi. VinFast remains committed to expanding in the country with 32 planned dealerships by year-end.
