Siemens CBTC NYC Subway Modernization Enables Faster Trains and Improved Capacity

Siemens Mobility, in partnership with L.K. Comstock, has secured a contract from Metropolitan Transportation Authority to upgrade signaling on New York City’s Fulton-Liberty subway lines.

The project, valued at nearly $390 million, will modernize 23 stations across 65 km of track using Communications-Based Train Control technology, Trainguard MT. This system will allow trains to run as close as every 90 seconds, improving service frequency and reducing wait times.

The upgrade replaces older infrastructure with advanced systems including 5G-based communication, axle counters and integrated train control. Work also includes installing over 1,200 km of cables, upgrading 94 switch machines and building four new control rooms.

The project will also introduce 5G connectivity for passengers in tunnels and stations. Once completed, Siemens will manage a 25-year maintenance contract with extension options.

The modernization supports long term reliability and prepares one of New York’s busiest transit corridors for future demand.
