Siemens Mobility and Stadler to Deliver Fully Automated S-Bane Trains for Copenhagen

Siemens Mobility and Stadler have signed a framework contract with Danish State Railways to deliver 226 fully automated four car trainsets for the S-Bane network in Copenhagen, with an option for up to 100 additional trains. Valued at around three billion euros, the project will create the world’s largest open railway system using fully automated train operation at Grade of Automation 4.

Siemens Mobility will lead the consortium and supply key electrical systems including propulsion braking train control passenger information and bogies. Stadler will deliver the car bodies interiors doors air conditioning and handle final assembly. The new trains are barrier free and feature open interiors flexible spaces and an iconic design focused on passenger comfort.

The project includes a long term service and maintenance agreement using Siemens Mobility’s Railigent X platform to ensure availability for more than 30 years. The first trains are expected to enter service from 2032 with deliveries continuing until 2040.

Fully automated operation will allow up to 35 percent more departures compared to today, creating capacity for around ten million additional journeys per year. The S-Bane network is also being upgraded with GoA4 signaling to enable fully driverless operations by 2033.
