Siemens Mobility conducted the Nordic region’s first automated train operation using the European Train Control System and Automatic Train Operation on a mainline in Finland.

The demonstration took place on a 19 kilometer railway route between Juurikorpi and Hamina. A modernized train owned by Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto Oy and operated by VR-Yhtymä Oyj was used during the test runs.

The system combined ETCS Level 2 signaling with Automatic Train Operation in a semi automated GoA2 mode. During the tests the train performed automated stops from speeds of 100 km/h with a stopping precision between 30 and 80 centimeters while maintaining smooth acceleration and controlled braking.

The project is part of Finland’s Digirail program aimed at modernizing rail infrastructure. The integration of ETCS and ATO is designed to improve network capacity, efficiency and punctuality while supporting more energy efficient rail operations.
