Siemens and Akiem Partner to Launch Battery-Enabled Vectron Locomotives
Siemens Mobility and Akiem have signed a framework agreement for up to 80 Vectron locomotives, including a firm order of 50 units.
The agreement includes the launch of the new Vectron Dual Mode Electric Battery locomotive, which can operate using overhead electric lines and on non-electrified routes through onboard traction batteries. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2029–2030.
The new locomotive builds on the existing Vectron Dual Mode platform, replacing diesel engines with modular battery systems. It is designed to support flexible operations across mixed rail networks while reducing emissions.
The model is expected to offer battery configurations of over 2 MWh and deliver up to 2,400 kW of power, with a maximum speed of 160 km/h. It is intended for both freight and passenger applications across partially electrified routes.
This collaboration continues the long-standing partnership between Siemens Mobility and Akiem, which has previously included multiple Vectron orders.
