Hyundai Expands Hydrogen Mobility With XCIENT Fuel Cell Trucks in South America

Hyundai Motor Company has deployed its Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell truck fleet in Uruguay, marking the first use of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks for commercial operations in South America.

The deployment includes eight Class-8 trucks and supports the Kahirós Project, a local initiative focused on reducing emissions in timber logistics using green hydrogen. The project combines renewable energy production with hydrogen generation and transport applications to build a low-carbon freight ecosystem.

Backed by investment from Santander Group and supported by organizations such as the International Finance Corporation and the United Nations Renewable Energy Innovation Fund, the initiative includes a solar park and hydrogen production facility.

The trucks are expected to operate extensively across logistics routes, helping reduce emissions while demonstrating the viability of hydrogen-powered freight transport.

This move adds Uruguay to Hyundai’s growing hydrogen ecosystem, which already includes deployments in North America and Europe, supporting the company’s broader efforts to expand alternative fuel solutions for commercial mobility.
